Cathode ray tubes (CRT) versus flat-screen televisions (LCD/LED)

A new energy law comes into force in Switzerland on 01.01.2012. From then on the EU requirements on energy efficiency labelling of television sets will also apply in Switzerland. All sold television sets must contain an energy label from that date.

At the same time, SWICO Recycling and SWICO Energy are launching an exchange campaign with various SWICO partners. It is envisaged that as many CRT devices as possible from Swiss households be exchanged for new, top-rate devices (A and better) and be disposed of in line with environmental requirements.

Exchange your old CRT device for a top-rate one, and enjoy 3 benefits!

  • You save electricity
  • You save money
  • You can receive digital television in high-definition (HD) quality

Hand it in and save energy:
  • There are still some 673,000 CRT TVs in use in Switzerland today.
  • By changing from a CRT device to a top-rate device with a Class A energy rating and better, 150 kWh can be saved on average each year.*
  • Therefore, the potential saving for the whole of Switzerland is about 100 million kWh.**

In detail:
  • Your new, top-rate device only uses half as much energy as an old CRT device
  • By replacing an old CRT device with a Class A device you will save the amount of electricity that a freezer (60 litres) uses over a year.
  • The electricity that you save also corresponds with the electricity consumption of a light bulb (17 Watt) that is used constantly for a whole year.

*Depending on the model and use each year
**Prerequisite: all the remaining CRT TVs are replaced by Class A flat screens
CRT (Cathode Ray Tube)
LCD/LED (Liquid Cristal Display with Light Emitting Diodes as background lighting)
