Protecting the environment and conserving resources are the primary goals of electronics recycling. The basis of the SWICO Recycling system is the Regulation on the Return, Take-Back and Disposal of Electrical and Electronic Equipment (VREG), which recommends that both consumers and companies arrange for disused equipment to be professionally recycled. Recycling is financed by the Advance Recycling Fee (ARF), which has been charged on new electrical and electronic equipment in Switzerland since 1994.
Private individuals, companies, dealers and local authorities can hand in their used equipment free of charge. SWICO Recycling sets and administers the Advance Recycling Fee and organises professional recycling through a network of qualified partners. As the manager of this pioneering take-back system - the first of its kind in Europe - SWICO Recycling has succeeded in persuading IT and consumer electronics companies to sign up to the SWICO Recycling Convention since 1994 (640 signatories) - almost 90 percent of all market participants.
